Land Clearing in North Fort Myers, FL

Permit triggers in unincorporated Lee County

North Fort Myers is unincorporated, so Lee County's Vegetation Removal Permit rules apply. According to the county's guide, clearing trees or vegetation on a single-family lot needs a permit when the lot is 5 acres or more. New development must first get a Development Order before a Vegetation Removal Permit can be approved. Contact Lee County Environmental Sciences at 239-533-8585 or [email protected] before you sign a clearing contract.

Wildlife checks

• Gopher tortoises must be relocated before land clearing, with an FWC permit (FWC).
• Burrowing owls are a State-designated Threatened species; FWC handles burrow permits (FWC).

Overhead and underground lines

Many lots have lines along the road or through an easement. LCEC says that only qualified line clearance arborists can work within 10 feet of energized lines, and that you should contact LCEC before tree work near them (LCEC). For anything underground, Sunshine 811 asks for a request two full business days before digging.

Planning the job

• Mark trees you want to keep and boundary lines
• Decide on mulching on site or hauling off
• Plan an equipment access route that avoids the septic area and well
• Make sure the clearing scope matches your builder's plan

Questions to ask the company

• Who gets the county permit, you or them?
• How will they handle a wildlife survey, if one is needed?
• Does the quote include stump grinding and debris removal?
