Less is more: what UF/IFAS recommends

UF/IFAS says "hurricane pruning," which cuts away most of a palm's fronds to make it more wind-resistant, is common in Florida and harmful to palms. You want a full, round canopy, and the rule of thumb is to remove only fully brown fronds (UF/IFAS: Pruning Palms).

Palms and power lines

LCEC says palms cause more than 50 percent of vegetation-caused outages for its customers. Don't prune palms yourself, or hire a contractor to prune them, if the trunk or fronds are within 10 feet of an energized line. Call LCEC; they may prune the palm safely or remove it at no cost to you. LCEC also warns against metal saws, ladders and lifts near lines (LCEC TreeWise brochure).

What a trim usually covers

  • Removing fully brown or broken fronds
  • Cutting off seed and flower stalks if you ask
  • Cleaning up the trunk where it's safe for the palm
  • Hauling away fronds

Pool cages, roofs and canals

Fronds that drop onto a pool cage or roof are a common reason to trim. On canal lots (the City has more than 400 miles of canals, per the City), tell the company if debris could fall into the water or onto a dock.

Before hurricane season

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 (NHC). Removing dead fronds and loose material before then makes sense, but don't strip the canopy.

Frequently asked questions

Should I have my palms hurricane-cut?

No. UF/IFAS says hurricane pruning is harmful to palms. Remove only fully brown fronds.

A palm is touching the power line. Can a trimmer handle it?

Not within 10 feet of an energized line. Call LCEC at 239-656-2300. They may prune or remove it at no cost.

How often should palms be trimmed?

It depends on the species and how fast fronds turn brown. Ask the company to trim only what's fully brown.

What does palm trimming cost?

It depends on height, number of palms, access, nearby lines and cleanup. The company gives you its own quote.
